Got ready using our normal morning routine and headed out this morning and ran into the last Minnesota couple suiting up for their Harley ride back across Beartooth and down Chief Joseph Scenic Hwy. They were going to Cody! Cody? Yup and staying at the Irma. They showed us their electric heated jackets with the built-in plug customized on the bike to keep them warm.
Couldn’t believe they were headed the same way as we.
Met Shackleton, Mack’s German Shepherd avalanche dog in-training. He’s tall and sleek for bounding through deep snow. He is Mack’s companion when he skis. Shackleton waits patiently at the top of the hill as each of the skiers in turn slalom down and he gets the OK from Mack to join them. This morning he was intent on his red ball as Mack played fetch with him.
Had never seen Juniper bow branches bent and molded into an elk before so had to stop and take a picture. Jumped on Hwy 308 and used pulloffs to take some great pictures of the Smith Mine, an old coal and iron mine that had a devastating accident in 1943 by trapping and killing 74 men.
Highway 72 took us through some lush, green farming territory and before we knew it, we had arrived in Cody!
First thing on the agenda was lunch so we stopped at Buffalo Bill Cody’s museum parking lot to eat and snap some photos of a young deer and, of course, Buffalo Bill.
We wandered the streets of Cody in search of a strip plaza made of wood with a plank sidewalk which housed a potter that Melodie had met and made a purchase 20 years ago. And to our amazement, we found the plaza but discovered the potter had closed shop some 10 years earlier.
Unfortunately for my pocketbook, we also found the Buffalo Bill Village Gift Shop and my Visa is worse off now. I’ve taken an oath…no more shopping. If Melodie wants to go, I must sit outside or in the car! I’ve purchased Christmas gifts and gifts for myself and it’s time to STOP THE INSANITY of shopping! ☺
Checked in to America’s Best Value Inn and went to Wyoming River Trips to verify our reservation. Good thing too since we had written a 1p trip and they scheduled us for a 9a. We would have missed it all together! Walked next door to WalMart and purchased a waterproof camera and returned to our room for journaling.
The dinner recommendation of the clerk at WalMart’s photo department led us to the Sunset House with a great salad and, yet again, no room for dessert. I think we need to start with dessert and see if we have room for dinner next time.
Now to get our clothes ready for tomorrow morning’s rafting trip, finish our today’s journal and get some sleep. Fun day tomorrow and will get our photos printed at Walgreen’s tomorrow afternoon before leaving Cody the next day.
