Hiking, Gasping in Awe, Floating with Neil

Started the day with our vanilla yogurt and blueberry breakfast with hot coffee! Had to shut the windows before going to bed since we were chilled to the bone while doing our journaling.

Off to Signal Mountain with an overlook stop and saw a herd of elk in the distance. Great photo op and we take every turnoff even if just to check it out for wildlife and continue on. This one yielded elk!

Signal Mountain gave us just that…a cell phone signal. I had left mine in the room so we used Melodie’s and sent texts to our kids. Gorgeous overlook views from the top. Everywhere there are Be Bear Aware signs like this one. And a geological marker mapped our location to a pinpoint.

Stopped at Glacier View Point and the wildflowers gave us a great foreground for yet another mountain photo! Soon all the mountains will look the same!

Stopped at Lake Jackson and was able to climb down to the water’s edge for this shot. Can’t believe the views at every turn.

Reached the visitor's center at Jenny Lake and took the ferry for a mile round-trip hike to Hidden Falls with an elevation change of 250'. For a first hike, I had to learn about pacing myself with the thinner air and constant climbing. Water was a must! But the falls at the end of the hike were awe-inspiring.

Stopped for lunch on a bench and were visited by a yellow-bellied marmot. Very cute but a little too close for comfort and my sandwich. We moved to go and so did he! This hike with time for photos actually took us 2 hours and we returned to the ferry to admire the crystal clear waters of Lake Jenny.

Had dinner at Dornan's Pizza & Pasta with a wonderful Greek calzone and a glass of wine. The place was packed and we had to hover to get a table to stay indoors to eat. Good timing since it poured during our dinner. Went to our meeting spot for our Barker-Ewing Snake River Float and napped for a half hour.

Our float lasted 7-9:30p and we saw elk, bison, beaver, moose and eagles. The water was wonderful and our guide, Neil, even more so! He was personable, humorous and a great navigator to keep us high and dry while spotting wildlife.

On our drive back to Colter Village (about 45 minutes) we came across a herd of elk no more than 10 yards off the highway. Too dark for photos was but what a thrill to watch. Note to self: Need a lighted shot!

Dumped photos and fell into bed around 11p. Sorry this blog site isn't letting me add more than a single photo!! More tomorrow. On to Yellowstone and Old Faithful Lodge.
